Sreeleela Top Pick For Dostana 2; To Replace Janhvi Kapoor In Vikrant Massey, Lakshya Film? | Exclusive
Dharma Productions recasts Dostana 2. Janhvi Kapoor is reportedly out with Sreeleela being considered for female lead.
In 2021, following reports of a fallout between Karan Johar and Kartik Aaryan, Dharma Productions took to social media and announced they would be ‘recasting’ Dostana 2 due to ‘professional circumstances’. The announcement confirmed that Kartik was no longer be part of the film and many reports suggested that the film was put on the backburner.
The film co-starring Janhvi Kapoor was supposed to mark the big screen debut of Lakshya, who eventually went on to foray into films with Kill. But on Tuesday (May 6), a Mid-Day report claimed that the makers are all set to revive Dostana 2 and while Lakshya will continue to be a part of it, Kartik has been replaced by Vikrant Massey. And now, News18 Showsha has an exclusive update on the spiritual sequel of the Dostana franchise.

A well-placed source tells us, “The story of Dostana 2 will remain the same but the cast the director have been changed. Janhvi Kapoor, who was roped in to play the female lead earlier, is no longer a part of the film. Instead, the makers are considering Sreeleela for the part. Her dance number in Pushpa 2: The Rule has made her a much sought-after name in the movies. And the team of Dostana 2 are extremely keen on having her in the film."
The source further adds, “There’s a lot of demand and positive word-of-mouth for Sreeleela, who is currently shooting for Anurag Basu’s next with Kartik Aaryan. The makers of Dostana 2 decided to recast the film, hoping to feature a set of actors who haven’t shared screen space in the past. It will indeed be interesting to see her chemistry with her co-stars." But there’s more to it. As per current discussions, Karan’s banner has signed in a new director who hasn’t worked with Dharma Productions in the past.
When Dostana 2 was announced a few years ago, Call Me Bae director Collin D’Cunha was supposed to direct it. But there seems to be a change on that front too. “Advait Chandan will most likely be helming Dostana 2 now," the source continues. In all likelihood, the shoot will begin in September or early next year depending on Vikrant’s Don 3 schedule.
On a related note, speaking to us earlier, Lakshya had said that his ‘moral shook’ when Dostana 2 was shelved. “My first film didn’t work out for me. Samajh nahi aa raha tha ki meri second film, Bedhadak, bhi hogi ya nahi hogi. Somewhere, I was losing that confidence as an actor and human being. My morale was going down. I wouldn’t say that I was feeling under-confident because that’s a very strong word but it really affected me deep down. I needed a film desperately. I needed work," he told us.
