As tensions between India and Pakistan escalate following a wave of cross-border hostilities, Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has taken a strong public stance against what she describes as the “circus" of Indian television news. In a scathing Instagram story posted on May 9, Sonakshi slammed mainstream news channels for their sensationalised and theatrical coverage of ongoing military operations, accusing them of creating panic instead of providing clarity.

“Our news channels are a joke!" she wrote. “I’m so done with these over-dramatised visuals and sound effects, the screaming and shouting! What are you’ll doing? Just do your job, report facts as they are."

In the same post, she continued: “Stop sensationalising WAR and creating panic in people who are anyway anxious, for God’s sake. People, just find a reliable news source and stick to that… stop watching this garbage in the name of news."

Sonakshi’s blunt critique came just hours after the Ministry of Defence issued a formal advisory to media outlets and digital platforms, urging them to refrain from airing real-time or live coverage of military operations, troop movements, and tactical decisions. The ministry warned that such coverage can compromise operational security, endanger personnel, and aid adversaries monitoring Indian media. The advisory also referenced past incidents—such as the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking—as cautionary examples of how irresponsible reporting can lead to serious national security risks.

The advisory and Sonakshi’s remarks follow a dramatic escalation in hostilities between the two nations. On May 8, Pakistan launched a series of drone and missile attacks targeting Indian states including Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir. However, Indian forces successfully intercepted and neutralised all incoming threats. These retaliatory strikes came in response to India’s Operation Sindoor—a coordinated and precision-based offensive launched on May 7 against nine terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was a direct response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead, including civilians and security personnel.
