Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. This comes after reports had emerged that the 38-year-old cricketer had been removed from captaincy for the longest format.
He announced his decision via an Instagram story post where he said," Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format."

After establishing his spot in the Test team back in 2021, he also took over the role as captain after Virat Kohli stepped down from the role. Rohit led India in the World Test Championship final against Australia for the 2021-2023 cycle and has been the leader since then.
Since the recent home series against New Zealand and the Test tour of Australia, Rohit’s position has come under scrutiny after his dry spell with the bat. There were speculations of retirement when he dropped himself from the side in the fifth Test at Sydney.
An unnamed source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was quoted by the Indian Express, saying that selectors wanted a new young leader for the new Test cycle and Rohit did not fit the bill, considering his form.
“The selectors’ thought process is clear. They want a new leader for the England tour and Rohit doesn’t fit in as a captain, especially considering his red-ball form. They want to groom a young leader for the next Test cycle and the selection committee has informed the BCCI that Rohit won’t lead the team," the source said.
The Indian team will now be on the hunt for a new leader ahead of their upcoming tour of England which is set to begin on June, later next month. But the good news is that Rohit will continue representing the country in the 50-over format as seen from his stellar displays by leading India to their second Champions Trophy title.
