Suriya’s latest flick Retro has been keeping fans buzzing since its May 1 release. Teaming up with director Karthik Subbaraj, the film has been on a steady box office journey. As of its sixth day in theatres, the movie is inching toward that coveted Rs 50 crore milestone.

On Tuesday, Retro managed to rake in Rs 1.23 crore from its morning and matinee shows. That brings the total to Rs 47.78 crore—so close, yet not quite at the golden number. The final tally for the day is expected later in the evening, and chances are it might just sneak past Rs 50 crore if the evening shows pull in the crowds.

While the film had a decent 17.58 per cent theatre occupancy among Tamil audiences, the Telugu version wasn’t far behind, clocking 12.11 per cent. That said, the number of screenings has started to dip a bit in both Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Only a handful of cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Bengaluru still boast over 100 showings a day, while Hyderabad continues to back the Telugu version with strong numbers.

In Retro, Suriya steps into the role of Paarivel Kannan, or Paari, a man with a dark, violent past. Pooja Hegde stars opposite him as Rukmini, fondly called Rukku. The film also features a solid supporting cast with Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, and Prakash Raj in key roles.

A part of the review of Retro by News18 read, “I wish Retro was just about one thing, and Karthik didn’t burden himself with social responsibilities, exploring his fascination for all things Tarantino, nostalgia, and ecoactivism at the same time. I also wish filmmakers across the board stop seeing films as a means to nurture their inner ‘fanbois’. Honestly, it is now tiring to keep getting odes, fanservice, and indulgence in the name of films. What’s more unfortunate is how filmmakers keep failing Suriya, when he gives it all every single time."
