Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by two wickets in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz started well, creaming Khaleel Ahmed through the covers on the first ball of the match. The first ball of the next over too was sent into orbit for a six, but Anshul Kamboj struck back on the third ball as Gurbaz chipped the ball in the air straight to Noor Ahmad at mid-wicket.
Ajinkya Rahane too got off the mark with a boundary, defending Kamboj for a four. The KKR skipper went after Khaleel, lifting him on the leg side for two boundaries. Sunil Narine too got off the mark with a boundary, edging Kamboj over the keeper and the slip. On the last ball of that over, Rahane ended up skying a flick, but Matheesha Pathirana could not hold on.
MS Dhoni opted to bring in Ravichandran Ashwin, but Narine took apart his fellow spinner, smashing two fours and a six as KKR reached the 50-run mark inside the fifth over. Rahane and Narine attacked Kamboj as the pair brought up their 50-run stand as KKR reached 67 from the powerplay.
Noor did not make a mistake with the ball in hand as he struck with his first ball, foxing Narine as the ball hit his pad and trickled behind, where Dhoni removed the bails in a flash to effect a stumping. Three balls later, Angkrish Raghuvanshi tickled a ball behind to Dhoni, as the stalwart became the first wicket-keeper to effect 200 dismissals.
Manish Pandey, playing in place of the injured Venkatesh Iyer, joined his skipper at the crease as KKR reached 87 at the halfway stage with the spinners keeping things quiet. Ravindra Jadeja struck after KKR crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over, removing Rahane after the KKR captain made a 33-ball 48. It was Jadeja’s 150 T20 wickets for CSK as he overtook current KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo as the leading wicket-taker for CSK in IPL.
Andre Russell, the star of KKR’s last match, broke his shackles in the 15th over, smashing Jadeja for two fours and one six. Matheesha Pathirana was the next to face punishment from Dre Russ as the KKR star hit a six and four, prompting Dhoni to call back Noor into the attack. After getting a lucky spin from a slice that took the ball away from the fielder, Russell smashed the fifth ball for a six. The Afghan spinner had his revenge immediately as Russell hit it straight to long off.
KKR reached the 150-run mark in the 18th over as Rinku Singh and Manish attacked Pathirana, hitting a four and a six respectively.
Rinku reverse-swept Noor for a boundary, but found as he found Ayush Mhatre in the deep. Manish stayed unbeaten till the end, helping KKR post 179/6 from their 20 overs.
KKR had the perfect start with the ball as Vaibhav Arora sent back Ayush Mhatre for a duck as he dollied a catch to impact substitute Harshit Rana at cover point.
Debutant Urvil Patel walked out to bat and got off the mark with a huge six off Vaibhav. Rahane threw the ball to Moeen Ali to target left-hander Devon Conway, but Urvil smashed two sixes and a four. Moeen, though, got his man, clean bowling Conway.
Ashwin joined Urvil and they hit Harshit for a four and a six respectively, but the latter hit back by removing the youngster as Varun Chakaravarthy took a sharp catch in the slip cordon.
Jadeja, who joined Ashwin at the crease, attacked Harshit as CSK reached the 50-run mark inside the fifth over. The KKR bowler removed Ashwin before the end of the over, with the off-spinner finding Angkrish at point. Jadeja welcomed Varun into the attack, but the KKR mystery spinner hit back immediately by castling him. At the end of the powerplay, CSK had scored 62 but lost half their side.
Impact sub Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis continued their attack on the KKR spin twin as CSK managed to reach the halfway stage at 93 without losing more wickets.
Brevis smashed Vaibhav for a six and back-to-back fours and another six straight down the ground to bring up his and Dube’s 50-run partnership. The South African was not done as he smashed the fifth ball into the stands and then a four to bring up his first IPL fifty in just 22 balls. 30 runs came from the over.
Varun returned to the attack and removed Brevis to break the 67-run partnership, his 100th IPL wicket.
The 42,373-strong crowd cheered, firstly for the home side and then on spotting Dhoni walk out for what could be his last knock at the Eden Gardens.
After a tight over from Narine, Rahane called on Russell into the attack but Dube attacked the all-rounder, smashing a four to ease the pressure as CSK reached the 15-run mark in the 17th over. Dube then turned his attention to Harshit, smashing a huge six into the stands to further bring down the required run rate.
Dube smashed Vaibhav for a huge six in the penultimate over but was dismissed on the very next ball. Noor too was sent back on the last ball, leaving Dhoni to get eight runs from the last over. Russell took the ball and was smacked for a six powerful over deep mid-wicket. After missing the second ball, Dhoni took a single down the ground on the third to level the scores. It was all up to Kamboj, and Rahane brought up the field. Russell ended bowling another half-volley as the youngster smashed the ball over the short mid-on for a boundary to help CSK beat KKR by two wickets.
