The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League was suspended on Friday because of the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

A cloud of uncertainty had loomed over the future of IPL 2025 since the cancellation of Thursday’s game between the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala, midway after air raid alerts in neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot.

As of yesterday, 58 out of the previously scheduled 74 games (including the group stage, playoffs, and the final) have taken place.

“It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war," a BCCI official told PTI, confirming the suspension of the league, which was to wind up on May 25 in Kolkata.

So, the 16 games left to be played in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League, which was initially scheduled to wrap up by May 25, will now take place at a later date.

“The players are doing well, but of course there is concern among them after seeing all that has happened," an IPL team official told PTI when asked about the foreign players’ state of mind.

On Thursday, Pakistan launched aerial attacks on Jammu as well as several military stations near the western border, which were successfully foiled by India’s air defence systems.

The attempted strike, involving drones and missiles, triggered blackouts and sirens across several areas in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

Emergency protocols were activated all over, including Dharamshala, where the IPL 2025 match between PBKS and DC was suspended midway (10.2 overs into the match, to be precise), due to a reported blackout (following air raid alerts in neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot).

Player (and spectator) safety has been prioritised, and the blackout last night has cast a shadow over the proceedings of the remainder of the IPL 2025 season.
